Abstract

Palm kernel shell fly ash (FACS) has the potential to be used as a partial cement substitute to improve concrete performance in aggressive environments. This study aims to analyze the effect of FACS variations on the compressive strength of normal concrete soaked in plain water and peat water. The method used is a quantitative experiment with concrete mix design referring to SNI 03-2834-2000 with a design compressive strength of 25 MPa f'c. The FACS variations used were 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% of the cement weight. The test specimens were cylinders measuring 15 × 30 cm and their compressive strength was tested at 28 days. The results showed that the 5% FACS variation produced the highest compressive strength, namely 26.45 MPa in plain water immersion and 21.91 MPa in peat water immersion. All concrete soaked in peat water did not reach the design compressive strength due to the influence of the acidic environment. Two-Way ANOVA analysis showed that FACS variations and the type of immersion water had a significant effect on the compressive strength of concrete, but there was no significant interaction between the two. This study concluded that the optimum use of FACS of 5% can increase the compressive strength of concrete, while peat water immersion significantly reduces concrete performance.
